Course Description

The course aims to familiarize students with distinctive forms and genres of Modern Greek theatre of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It focuses on complex theatrical manifestations that are not usually included in the core narrative of the history of Modern Greek theatre, yet were significant and highly popular in their own historical contexts.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand the complexity and diversity of the theatrical phenomenon;
  • recognize the various manifestations of theatre in modern Greece and approach theatre history as an integrated field, free from rigid boundaries and exclusions;
  • distinguish between different genres and forms of Modern Greek theatre and identify their defining characteristics;
  • evaluate theatrical activity in modern Greece in relation to broader European cultural developments;
  • relate historical and social realities to different aspects of artistic and theatrical life;
  • identify major practitioners and playwrights, as well as significant theatrical works.
